I would try to be angry with him but it would be fleeting as he would smile back at me and wag his tail furiously.

He kept me fit by walking me at every opportunity and always just ahead checking the way and investigating every sniff and sound. text-align: left;">After leaving to cool the syrup was still a bit too runny, not quite thick enough but certainly sweet enough, I'll keep the heat up a little longer at the end for the next batch to ensure a thicker consistency.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I need to give up the smokes and get fitter.

Weather- a storm blew in over Cape Breton with 100km + winds, so discretion was the order of the day and we camped on the bottom land after the storm moved through.

The shake down highlighted my lack of experience in winter camping and gave us lots of food for thought not least is the planning that is required, it's not like camping in the U.K. where you are pretty much within walking distance of help and succour, get into trouble in the highlands and you are many many miles from help.

So at the end of the day the right decisions were made and trouble was avoided, lets face it we do this for fun, not to endanger ourselves and others.

The really interesting part of the 3 weeks for me personally was the making of our kit, learning how to get that graceful curve on the front of the toboggan, marvelling at the warmth and comfort of mukluks, using the snowshoes that I made and talking things through with a like minded friend.

Fall

Well Fall is definitely here the colours are magnificent, the nights are getting crispy and the days are quite sunny which are ideal conditions for good fall colours.

I've been helping Chuck a Friend of mine cutting next years fuel wood, it's great working in the woods now as there are no black fly and it's not too hot, most of what we're cutting is maple that has grown from the stumps of a previous cut 40-50 years ago so they are not too big a tree to handle. So I laminated Elm to Maple and had much better success. This bow is a laminate of Elm and Birdseye Maple, it draws approx 70lb @ 26in and is only 60inches long, as usual several arrows were lost in the long grass, well lost until Erik the flatcoat was put on the case, best arrow finding retriever this side of the Atlantic only problem is you have to be right next to him when he finds them or he tries to pull them out with his teeth and then proceeds to shred them.

Opened the tote we use to store garden implements in and type='text'>Autumn/ Fall

There's an amazing amount of wild life in Nova Scotia and yesterday as I was walking the dogs down the meadow I came across the largest pile of dung I have seen so far, I'm assuming that its bear and I've yet to see one in the wild, I've made a track trap by smoothing out a boggy patch of ground along the path I think he/she is using and hopefully we will get prints in the mud.
The humming birds have gone south now I'll miss them buzzing around the feeders but to make up for them two piliated woodpeckers have turned up and are hammering furiously on the dead spruce at the back of the house, a good reason for leaving dead standing habitat.
This morning while having my coffee on the deck a Sharp Shinned hawk crashed into the Blue jays trying to get his morning meal, the Blue jays scattered into the bushes with an almighty commotion, he was unsuccessfull this time but what a sight to behold they're amazingly agile and will chase birds right into the tree branches.
The Squirrels have dissappeared along with the Chipmunks, our neighbour said he spotted a Marten several times over the last few weeks and Squirrel is normally on the menu for them.
The Salmon will be running soon and the oppportunity to fish for them although there is some debate whether there will be Salmon fishing on the Middle river as there are on-going negotiations with the First Nation M'ikmaq over fishing rights.
<img width='1' height='1' to share the day to day happenings of our life in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. We (Ian & Lisa) emigrated to Cape Breton a year ago, I'm a bushcraft instructor and Lisa has an antique and restoration business in Baddeck. We bought an old farm house which hasn't been actively farmed for 40 years, it came with 200 acres and lots of wildlife. The land opposite the house is mostly woodland and the intended site of my Bushcraft school (approx 70 acres), the land below is old meadows (great deer habitat) that have turned to brush, a brook (Cold brook (aptly named), then there are more woods a shallow lake and marsh (great moose habitat). When I talk about traditional living, I'm referring to growing your own food and making tools and implements as the first European settlers would have, also incorporating 1st nation crafts and tools but I'm a realist and there are times when modern conveniences like tractors and snow mobiles make more sense. Hopefully there is a happy medium between the two. The traditional methods need to kept alive there's a lot to learn and mistakes will be made but hopefully over all valuable lessons will be learnt

Hopefully there will be items of interest to the bushcraft community in particular and everyone else generally.
